Desmond Leung is a media artist and creative director who explores contemporary aesthetics and meaning by combining ink painting, moving image and new media into a new visual language. Leung’s work is inspired by cosmology, metaphysics, nature, microcosms, spirituality and oriental philosophy. His work spans across Chinese landscape painting (shan shui), lyrical abstraction and time-based media. Leung’s work is influenced by Buddhism and by the philosophies and work of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner, Chinese painters Wu Guan Zhong, Zao Wou Ki, Chu Teh Chun, Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky and Swiss-German painter Paul Klee.
Leung’s works have been exhibited internationally in the US, Japan, Hong Kong, China, Australia, Poland, Korea and Singapore, and at numerous art exhibitions and film festivals, including the CHANEL Digital Art Program, various cities, 2012; the Hong Kong International Art Fair, 2011; Asian Top Gallery Hotel Art Fair, 2011; Eastpak Artist Studio Exhibition, Hong Kong, 2011; October Contemporary, Hong Kong, 2009; Media Pole Exhibition, Seoul, 2012; Resfest, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne, 2005; Get It Louder, Shenzhen, 2006; amongst others. Leung has had major solo and group exhibitions in Hong Kong including Methods of Art, Connecting Spaces, 2015; The Fleeting World, PMQ, 2014, and Stonehenge - New Media Arts Exhibition, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, 2014. Leung is an honouree of Perspective Magazine’s 40 Under 40 Awards 2014, which honours young artists who are leading art and design in Asia.
